When I wrote this book,  I wanted to d three things that I believed were not being done in present sex-role textbooks. The first was to attempt an equal balance between discussions of the masculine and the feminine stereotyped roles in this society. The second was to present a life cycle perspective of sex roles and to show how sex-role socialization continues while sex-role prescriptions change in the adult years. The third objective was to include material on certain groups whose sex roles seem to deviate somewhat from the American cultural norm. I believed that these groups, such as single-parent families, remarried families, and black families, could tell us a great deal about changing roles and the posibilities and the probabilities for different kinds of behavior in the future.
