A vast amount of literature has been published to mark the 600th anniversary of the first voyage to the Western Oceans by Admiral Zheng He (1371-1435). This short account uses mainly Chinese sources and was published in Beijing. It includes: colour photographs of museum relics and artefacts; drawings and sketch maps; discussions of nautical technology, of trade and diplomacy during the Ming period and of the wide-reaching impacts made by Zheng He's voyages; and also a chronology of major events which took place in the Admiral's lifetime.
