A collection of brilliant letters by Raden Adjeng Kartini, who was one of the early fighters for independence in Indonesia and is still (although she is dead) a popular national figure.
Her letters, which were written in Dutch, were collected and published in Holland in 1911 and later translated into Indonesian. Through her writing she became a spokesman for Indonesian national aspirations, and with the eventual achievement of Indonesian independence and the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia in 1949, Kartini assumed the stature of a national heroine.
Her birthday is still celebrated throughout Indonesia by lectures and various celebrations.
